From Dust to Resurrection: The Body, the Spirit, and Eternal Life “From dust we came, and to dust we shall return.” These words remind us of one of the simplest truths of human existence: our earthly body is mortal. Whatever our wealth, beauty, strength, status, or achievements may be, the physical body eventually returns to the earth from which it came. The body is temporary, but Christianity teaches that human existence does not end with physical death. There is a spiritual dimension to the human person that is held by God beyond the grave. The Body Returns to Dust The human body is wonderfully made, yet it is not eternal in its present earthly form. After death, the body gradually decomposes and returns to the elements of the earth. This should make us humble. There is little reason to be proud of physical appearance, strength, possessions, or worldly status. The body that we admire today will one day become dust.
